Cupcakes are a very popular pop trend in today’s world. There is even a national Cupcake Day (December 15). But how were cupcakes created? I have been asking myself this question for quite some time and finally decided to look it up. In the 19th century, cupcakes were developed to save time in the kitchen. Because they were smaller, they took less time to prepare (as there was less ingredients) and less time to cook. No one is sure where the name came from, but one theory is that because they were small and cooked in cups, they were given their name. Another theory is that the ingredients were measured in cups. When they were first developed, they were given the nickname “number cups” because the ingredients were simple and easy to remember (example: 1 stick of butter, 2 cups of sugar, 3 cups of flour, etc.). Then, in the early 20th century, muffin tins were created. People began baking cupcakes in the tins instead of cups. Throughout the years, cupcakes have become more and more popular. In 2005, Candace Nelson created the first cupcake bakery, called Sprinkles Cupcakes. Today, there are hundreds of cupcake bakeries all over the world, and thousands of cupcake fanatics (like me!).
